Once again Chanel is taking inspiration from a film set in France. Inez & Vinoodh’s campaign cor Chanel starring Kristen Stewart has “contrasting elements of sophisticated sensuality yet natural allure.” While the campaign’s film is referencing Resnais’ Last Year in Marienbad through a film poster (as well as that one shot of Stewart looking out the window) the theme itself stems from Otto Preminger’s 1958 classic film Bonjour, Tristesse. The film begins in a glamorous, upper class black and white Parisian nightlife whilst the summer holidays are being spent in a sun drenched villa at the Côte d’Azur near St. Tropez.
The two parts of the film couldn’t be greater in visual contrast and Chanel picks it up for their SS 2023 Prêt-à-porter collection.
Chanel channels Seberg in Paris and by the sea
Jean Seberg stuns in a what could be classic Dior New Look dress as she dances through the restaurants and bars in Paris. She switches her outfits for more preppy bright outfits in the sun. The colours and light of the Côte d’Azur are full of life yet peaceful and serene. The two parts of the film couldn’t be greater in visual contrast and Chanel picks it up for their SS 2023 Prêt-à-porter collection. While the original film is much more saturated in colour, the Inez & Vinoodh’s take summer in the South is bit brighter and less punchy. However, the theme remains the same.
